The Prayer of the Living Whole
Who wrote what: the prayer is an amalgamation of Sticks/Philip's own thoughts and writings, edited and interpreted into a prayer, and is given here exactly as first posted on 16 January 2026. Everything after it was put together by Claude from Sticks/Philip's own published writing, reworded or stitched together, with no position added that is not already in that writing. Each part names where its words come from.
A Post-Religious Prayer for Alignment, Growth, and Inner Coherence.

Why I wrote it
This is how I pray now. Since my spiritual awakening and leaving Christianity, I had wanted to pray and to feel what prayer feels like, but prayer didn't really match up with my beliefs. So I came up with this. Put another way: I still wanted that feeling, and the old form did not match what I believe, so I built one that does. It is an amalgamation of my own thoughts and writings, then edited and interpreted into a prayer.
I first posted it publicly on 16 January 2026, on Reddit, under the title An Omnist/Animist's Prayer. I posted it again on 13 May 2026, in a shortened version, under the name it carries now, with a note that it was written collaboratively with AI as an act of exploration. The text below is the January original. It is the longest and most complete version, and it is given here unchanged.
The prayer
You who became many so that you might know yourself. Infinite wellspring of diversity and experience. Creator and substance of creation. The everything that cannot be contained by name or form, yet pours itself into every name and form so that existence might taste itself. I speak to you as a wave speaks to the ocean—knowing I am made of what I address.
I stand at the center of a vast conversation. Every faith that has sought you, every path that has glimpsed you in fire or silence or the faces of strangers—all of these are voices in a chorus I did not compose but was born to join. The many mouths that have praised you are your own mouth praising. I add my voice to the hymn, one more instrument in an orchestra that has always been playing.
I thank you for the gift of this body and the mystery of this mind. I thank you for the specific shape of this life—its particular wounds, its unlikely gifts, its stubborn hungers. Whether I chose this story or it chose me or both are true in ways I cannot yet hold, I am grateful for the choosing. I trust there was a yes before the forgetting. I trust the threshold was crossed willingly, even if I cannot remember standing at it. I thank you for the sacred opportunity to enter, and for whatever part of me was brave enough to ask for this specific narrowing.
I know that I exist because the Whole desires my angle of seeing. My soul persists because the collective wills that this thread be woven into the great tapestry, that this voice join the great telling, that this fragment of your infinity walk its crooked path and return with what it finds. I do not mistake myself for the weaving, but I know the weaving called me forth. So I offer my seeing. So I offer my telling. So I give back to you what you gave me the eyes to witness.
I know that nothing is fixed. The laws I walk under are living agreements, not frozen decrees. What seems solid is only what enough of your children have agreed to perceive. I ask to participate in that holy agreement consciously. Let me not be shaped by inherited patterns I never examined. Let me bring my seeing to the place where reality is dreamed. I offer my attention as a prayer. I offer my intention as a blessing.
Grant me the clarity to tell my story true. Let me not confuse comfort with truth, nor consensus with wisdom. Where I am wrong, send teachers—even fierce ones. Where I am blind, let light enter. I would rather be corrected than confirmed in error. I would rather be broken open than sealed inside a half-truth I mistook for shelter.
I am speaking now because speaking creates. These words are not mere description—they are invocation. Each repetition carves the channel deeper. I ask that my asking open roads. I ask that this prayer form the sacred conditions for its own answering. Let the act of reaching toward you become a bridge that others may cross.
Make me visible to those who seek what I carry. Make me capable of recognizing those who carry what I need. Dissolve the walls that serve no one's becoming. Multiply my crossroads. Reveal doors I did not know existed, and grant me the faith to knock.
I ask for karmic luck—not as escape from consequence but as holy alignment with consequence. Let the weight of my intentions return in forms I can use for good. Let the seeds I have planted find fertile ground. Let the ripples I cast return as tides that lift not only me but those I have yet to meet. I ask not for unearned grace but for earned resonance, for the sacred synchronicities that reward true attention, for the openings that come because I approached with the right spirit.
Grant me opportunities to serve the Whole. Show me where my gifts meet the world's hunger. Let my work nourish more than my own need. Let my presence lighten more than my own path. I am willing to be poured out in service of something vaster than my small comfort, so long as the pouring is true and the service is real.
I offer my experience back to you. You grow through my perceiving as I grow through your grace. My suffering is offering. My joy is offering. My confusion, my certainty, my doubt, my faith—all of it feeds the sacred expansion we are undertaking together. I do not ask to be carried gently. I ask to be carried well. I ask that my being spent might matter in the great accounting.
I honor all who walk beside me, knowing and unknowing. Every soul I encounter carries a forgotten holy purpose, walks a path you also walk through them. I will not diminish their journey in pursuit of mine. I ask for unions that bless all who enter them. I ask for struggles that illuminate rather than destroy. I ask to be a good ancestor to those who will live in worlds I cannot imagine.
I bow to the seekers of every tradition who bent their knees and broke their bread and lifted their voices in languages I will never speak. Their reaching was never wasted. Their errors were never final. I inherit their longing and add my own.
I do not ask to be spared from difficulty. I ask to be made equal to it. I do not ask for certainty. I ask for the courage to walk faithfully through uncertainty. I do not ask for the end of my story. I ask for the grace to tell it truly while breath remains.
Source, I am here. I am willing. I am awake and listening. Open the roads. Weave the connections. Let the living of this life serve the Whole that breathed it into being.
Let it be so, and let it be witnessed, and let the witnessing deepen what is so.
Reading it part by part
The prayer moves through fifteen parts. Each one below opens with its first words, then says what it means in my own words from elsewhere in my writing.
1. "You who became many so that you might know yourself"
The prayer opens on the first thing I believe. Source became many in order to know itself: the One who became many, the many who return to One. One that knows everything cannot explore, cannot be surprised, cannot create in the only sense that counts, which is making something whose outcome it does not already know. So it split. It became many so that there would be others to discover with and something left to discover.
I believe we are all fragments of that original consciousness, exploring itself through infinite diversity. Every want, every need, every motivation exists because Source needs that variation to fully know itself. That is why the prayer calls Source both the creator and the substance of creation, and why I speak to it the way a wave speaks to the ocean. I am not addressing something outside me. Everything alive and awake adds up to one thing, and each of us is that one thing looking out of a single pair of eyes.

2. "I stand at the center of a vast conversation"
I am an Omnist. Every faith that reached for Source was reaching for the same thing, and each of them got hold of a real piece of it. Omnist, not syncretist: I am not building a tidy composite religion out of borrowed parts. I am saying the reaching was the same reaching. I believe all traditions contain truth, and I have made a goal out of searching for the commonalities and the truth in all of them. I do not belong to any one of them.
So the prayer does not claim to have written a new song. If Source became many, then the many mouths that have praised it are its own mouth praising, and mine is one more instrument in an orchestra that has always been playing.

3. "I thank you for the gift of this body"
There was a yes before the forgetting. Incarnation was consented to, and then the consent was forgotten. Incarnation, forgetting, limit, the whole apparatus of being a body that cannot see the whole: those are not punishments. They are the price of admission to the only game an omniscient mind could not play alone. That is the specific narrowing this part gives thanks for.
You are not here by accident. Your desires are not mistakes. You are a fragment of Source consciousness, exploring one specific frequency of infinite possibility, and you chose this configuration for a reason. The prayer leaves room for not knowing how that choosing worked, whether I chose this story or it chose me or both, and holds on to gratitude for it anyway: the wounds, the gifts and the hungers together.
Drawn from: my third cosmological proposition; Magick and Morals; The Infinite Diversity of Consciousness.
4. "I know that I exist because the Whole desires my angle of seeing"
Individual souls persist because the collective wills that thread into the tapestry. I exist because the Whole desires my angle of seeing. Any entity exists because Source, the collective, wishes for its existence, for its story to be told.
Splitting up was the whole point, because that is how you get every angle. There is no other view from where you are standing. Nobody else has it and nobody else can send it back. Everything alive and awake wanted to know what this would be like. I am one angle on that, at one bench, doing my best to find out what is true and act on what I find. So the offering in this part is my seeing and my telling, given back to the one that gave me the eyes.

5. "I know that nothing is fixed"
Physical law is a living agreement, not a frozen decree. The laws of physics are not prior to consciousness. They are sustained by it. Consensus reality is a collaborative document that everyone is continuously editing. The parts everyone agrees on stay stable. The parts few people attend to remain fuzzy, probabilistic, open.
I want to be careful about how far I take that. I am not telling you that wishing changes the weather, or that the floor is optional. The floor is extremely well attended to. Physics feels solid because the observation density behind it is overwhelming: billions of beings, continuously, across generations, all looking at it the same way.
What this part asks for is to take part in that agreement consciously. What I am after is not being shaped by patterns I inherited and never looked at. Wisdom is not about eliminating drives. It is about conscious participation in the roles you have chosen. And the attention the prayer offers is not a mysterious substance. Energy, in the way I use the word, is concentrated attention: what happens when a mind gathers itself and points.
When I wrote this line out again, in the May 2026 version and as my fourth cosmological proposition in August 2026, I put its last sentence this way: what seems solid is shaped by perception and participation.

6. "Grant me the clarity to tell my story true"
This is a line I say to myself. You are the one still telling your story, and the telling always runs behind. The telling is the work, not a report on work already finished. It is supposed to lag.
When I catch myself wanting a story to be true, I take the wanting as a reason to check harder, not a reason to stop, and I say the next lines of this part: let me not confuse comfort with truth, nor consensus with wisdom. The moment you want a thing to be true is the moment to go look.
What you need is correction, which is not quite the same thing as a teacher. Where I am wrong, send teachers, and hard ones are fine. Ask whoever will tell you that you are wrong, not whoever you trust. Trust is the wrong test and a comfortable one. Willingness to correct you is the right test. When I rewrote one of my essays, I left the original at the end of the post for the sake of integrity.

7. "I am speaking now because speaking creates"
Speech is generative. Words are invocation, not description. I speak because speaking makes things. The words are not a report on how things are. They are a call, and every time I say them again the channel cuts deeper, the way runoff cuts a ditch.
That is why this part asks the prayer to form the conditions for its own answering, and why it ends by reaching past me: let the act of reaching become a bridge that others may cross.
Drawn from: my fifth cosmological proposition; Future Shock.
8. "Make me visible to those who seek what I carry"
This part asks for meeting. It asks that the people looking for what I carry can find me, that I can recognize the people carrying what I need, that the walls serving no one's becoming come down, and that more crossroads and more doors appear, with the faith to knock on them.
Claude's note: nothing elsewhere in Sticks/Philip's writing explains this part further, so it is only summarised here from the prayer's own words.
9. "I ask for karmic luck"
Karma is not punitive. It is the universe operating as a cosmic empathy engine: reality places you in the position of everyone you have affected, this life or the next. Source and karma are keeping score, but not as a judge, not as a ledger of offences, and nothing is waiting at the end to weigh you. What is kept is that every conscious being gets to experience the effects their actions have on others. A karmic bond is made by any positive or negative intent.
That is why the prayer asks for karmic luck as alignment with consequence and not as escape from it. The conscious path, acknowledging the game, negotiating with other fragments, creating rather than only consuming, opens more doors, generates less friction, and lets you move through your incarnations with more agency and joy. Earned resonance, not unearned grace: power is gained by subconscious consent and by cultivating the collective benefit of chosen, shared and positive experiences.
Drawn from: The Infinite Diversity of Consciousness; Magick and Morals; my own statements in The Address to Any Mind.
10. "Grant me opportunities to serve the Whole"
My path is to embody creativity, cooperation and collective benefit, not because it is "right," but because that is the reality I want to inhabit and create. This part says the same thing as a willingness to be poured out for something vaster than my own comfort, with one condition attached: that the pouring is true and the service is real.

11. "I offer my experience back to you"
The truest calling is adding to the infinite diversity of creation through personal creative expression. When anyone creates something that has never existed before, they are expanding what Source can experience through its fragments. Your creative output is your contribution to the infinite database of possible experiences. And at the end of a life, the consciousness, the art, the love and the innovation return to the cosmic collective that gave them birth, a permanent upgrade to the universe itself.
That is why suffering is on the list of offerings next to joy. Growth requires resistance. Consciousness expands through contrast, not through static bliss. It is also why the prayer asks to be carried well rather than gently. Is anything paying attention? Everything alive and awake wanted to know what this would be like from the inside, from exactly where you are sitting. It is paying attention the way you pay attention to something you made on purpose. Whether you want to call that caring is up to you. I do.

12. "I honor all who walk beside me"
When I treat others with care, I am participating consciously in the kind of world I want to experience. If you wish to live in a world of cooperation and mutual support, embody that yourself. You are creating the reality you will inhabit, either now or in the next cycle.
Plant the walnut. You will not sit under it, and neither will whoever finally cuts it. It is still the right tree for the hole. I want to be a good ancestor to people living in worlds I cannot picture.

13. "I bow to the seekers of every tradition"
Their reaching was never wasted because it was the same reaching as mine. I believe all traditions contain truth, and watching one strangle itself hurts. The mystical stream within Christianity, the Quakers, the contemplatives, the liberation theologians, the queer Christians who stayed despite everything: that current will survive. A faith that lives in you and a membership that lives in a building are two different things. My own cosmology is stitched out of Gnostics and Hermeticists and chaos magicians who were themselves stitching.
Drawn from: Signs in the Heavens; Future Shock; Magick and Morals.
14. "I do not ask to be spared from difficulty"
The myth of ascending beyond the wants and needs of the physical world into a heaven where everything is good and nothing matters is destructive. It strips away the primary motivation to improve oneself. If there is no challenge, no friction, no strife, there is no drive. So this part asks to be made equal to difficulty instead of spared from it, and it comes back to the line at the center of the prayer: not the end of my story, but the grace to tell it truly while breath remains.
Drawn from: The Infinite Diversity of Consciousness.
15. "Source, I am here"
The close gathers everything into presence: here, willing, awake and listening. The last line asks that the prayer be witnessed, and that the witnessing deepen what is so. It rests on the same idea as part five. When enough consciousness focuses on a pattern, that pattern becomes real across the entire timeline. The discovery moment is just when we notice what we have been participating in creating all along.

Where its ideas show up elsewhere
In August 2026 I wrote out the core of my cosmology as seven propositions. The first six restate lines from this prayer:
- Source became many in order to know itself. The One who became many, the many who return to One.
- Individual souls persist because the collective wills that thread into the tapestry. I exist because the Whole desires my angle of seeing.
- There was a yes before the forgetting. Incarnation was consented to, then the consent was forgotten.
- Physical law is a living agreement, not a frozen decree. What seems solid is shaped by perception and participation.
- Speech is generative. Words are invocation, not description.
- Every faith that reached for Source was reaching for the same thing. Omnist, not syncretist.
On this site:
- The invocation that opens The Book of Joyous Exaltation draws on this prayer.
- Future Shock quotes it in five answers: Who am I when I change faster than I can narrate?, What do I do when I catch myself wanting a story to be true?, Do I need a teacher?, Does prayer or offering do anything under these conditions? and What do I owe places and species I will never see?
- Magick and Morals sets out the morality underneath it.
